Firth Strata Brick produces a winning combination

Renown group home builder Jalcon Homes, a third-generation family-owned business in Auckland, has a reputation for creating modern, quality homes in some of the city’s most contemporary and vibrant communities. Their recently completed, carefully crafted development on West Tamaki Road in Glen Innes, featuring Firth’s slimline Strata Brick, is yet another example, standing out from the rest with the striking use of Strata Brick throughout the homes which feature curved entrances and lace-like frontages.

The brief: To create a unique, stylish design for these new townhouses using easy-care, low-maintenance Firth Strata Bricks for both practical and aesthetic reasons.

“We decided to use brick in our recent West Tamaki development, not only for its durability but also for its striking design aesthetic,” says Jacob Aitken, Director of JAL Developments.

“Firth was very good with helping with samples and details about the brick which was produced at their Hunua block plant in South Auckland - a plus in helping to reduce transport costs and therefore carbon emissions.”

“We wanted these homes to be an architectural statement, so the brick was used to help create a playful aesthetic — from the curved brick entrance to the perforated decorative screens. These design elements aren’t just about appearance — they are functional too. The perforated brick screen, for example, provides homeowners with privacy while allowing natural light to flood the space. It also creates a connection between the home and the street, blending openness with a sense of sanctuary. Firth’s Strata Brick enabled us to balance these practical and creative aspirations beautifully.”

“We also need to mention our bricklayers Epro Construction as they did a marvellous job as the curves were quite a tricky ask for them. Their craftsmanship has been outstanding.”

“Overall the stylish, while practical look and feel of the townhouses was definitely achieved and we are very happy with the outcome,” adds Jacob.

Incorporating easy-care, low-maintenance bricks in these unique, stylish townhouses has delivered a winning combination of aesthetic appeal, practicality and long-term value for the new home buyers of this Jalcon development.
