Large volumes of concrete pour into the new AIAL Transport Hub

The construction of a new Transport Hub for Auckland Airport at the international terminal is well underway after being put on hold due to the Covid pandemic. The new multi-storey building is being built by the head contractor ICON, with Dominion Constructors as the concrete structure subcontractor and Firth supplying concrete for this key project for Auckland Airport.

“Currently we are pouring an average of two large post tension slabs per week of around 300m3,” says Jamie Frew, National Commercial Account Manager for Firth. “We have been starting at 2am and finishing around 6am with most of the concrete coming out of the Airport plant and the remainder from Narek Place, Manukau.”

Firth’s Auckland Airport plant set to be one of the busiest in the country

“This project is one of four we currently have on the go at the Airport and the hope is to pick up two more large contracts over the next few months,” says Jamie. “This will make the Airport plant one of the busiest in the country. Rajesh (Roger) Panjanani (South Auckland Area Operations Manager) and his team have done an awesome job managing all aspects of these large pours with Roger and Adrian (Airport Plant Manager) often onsite managing the quality and delivery of our product.”

The big picture…

The new four-storey Transport Hub is being built to double height on the ground floor so that it can accommodate buses as well as cars, with the upper floors featuring smart car parking and three floors of office space. It will enable existing and future public transport to be at the heart of Auckland Airport.
