With the Council and community recognising the need for a new town square, and after public submissions and final sign off, HEB Construction were awarded the construction of the new Albion Square – to be located at the original site of its namesake.

Undoubtedly the standout feature of the new square, opened to the public in late 2014, is the very distinctive paving pattern – part of a landscaping plan developed by Boffa Miskell Landscape Architects - created from a variety of Firth pavers and representing a flounder, a weaving pattern reflective of Raupaki and the Lyttelton Harbour.

Ezra Weaver from TradeMark Paving was the contractor who worked to the intricate paving plan. “This was a very involved and intricate pattern,” he explains. “It meant we had to work closely with Firth for supply of the various pavers and colours we needed.”

“We have used Firth for many years as we know we can rely on them to get us what we need,” adds Ezra. “Paul Cumberland is our Firth Sales Rep and he does a great job sorting out anything we need. Sally George from Firth also helped out a lot on this job. Firth has been great, we wouldn't use anyone else.”

Central to the square is the Lyttelton War Memorial Cenotaph
which has undergone extensive repair and restoration since
the earthquakes. A reinforced concrete core and foundation
has added strength to the war memorial and new heritage
lights have been custom made to replicate the originals
which dated back to the 1920s.

“We also paved the area around the refurbished Centaph using Firth honed Forum Flagstone pavers in Black Sands,” explains Ezra. “I have to say the whole square looks amazing now. The intricate paving, although involved to lay, has come up really well. It does look great.”

The new square includes a sheltered performance area, seats, raised planters constructed from reclaimed timber, a grassed terrace, a hand-operated pump, a public toilet and a children’s play area – providing Lytteltonians with an amazing new recreational space.
