On the 3rd anniversary of the Christchurch earthquakes the largest concrete pour in the Christchurch CBD since that fateful day saw almost 900m3 of concrete poured by Firth at Antony Gough’s $140 million ‘The Terrace’ - an upmarket hospitality, retail and office development overlooking the River Avon.

Arrow International, the main contractors for the new build, nominated Constructa Construction as sub contractor. Firth was awarded the job of supplying the total volume of concrete in one day for the slab of the new complex.

“There was nothing particularly unusual about the mix on this pour, however the coordination required due to the volume made it a little more involved from our perspective,” said Dominic Sutton, Head of Sales & Operations (Certified Southern) for Firth. “We started at 4am and were done by 10am as we used 17 trucks from two plants - Hornby and Bromley - to ensure that supply was as required.”

“Firth did a really good job on this pour,” said Phil Melligan, Shareholder from Constructa Construction Ltd. “The service and supply was exactly what they said they would do - in fact it was probably a bit better than what they promised.”

With two pumps on site and the combined effort of the Firth and Constructa teams they managed between 170 – 200m3 of concrete per hour. “Firth had up to four trucks backed up behind two pumps ready to go at any one time. It was a really good job by them. We will certainly use them again and would have no problems in recommending them to anyone else. They did what they said they would do - and more.”

Eventually The Terrace will include bars, restaurants, shops, a hotel, apartments and offices, along with 40,000mof built space where up to 2000 people will work – just what the city needs as it slowly recovers.
